Abstracts of letters patent, [ca. 1850].

This series consists of a partial set of volumes containing summary information about land patents awarded by New York Colony and New York State. The volumes abstract, in rough chronological order, patents awarded from 1770-1802 and 1813-1843; however, patents awarded to veterans of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War as payments for military service are not included. Patents granting lands that New York ceded to Vermont, ca. 1820, are scattered throughout the volumes.

Early commissions were recorded by the secretary of the Colony of New York. Chapter 12 of the Laws of 1778 appointed the secretary of state the clerk of the Council of Appointment. The 1821 state constitution abolished the council, and its powers were transferred to the governor.
